3 Balls, A Retired Jersey, and the Flag Lady

Last night Spencer and I went to the D-Backs games. It just so happened that it was the night they retired Luis Gonzalez's jersey.

Spencer and I got to Chase Field about two hours early to watch batting practice and have some dinner. Our seats were in left field so we were able to hang out there and to try and catch home runs during practice. One of the players threw a ball to Spencer. He was so excited. A few minutes later, one came right to our seat and I caught it.

After some fun during batting practice, we went to Friday's for dinner. Just as we were finishing up, they started the jersey retirement ceremony. We went out on the Friday's balcony to watch.
Here's a picture of Spencer, seconds after they revealed Gonzalez's number 20 (it's just above Spencer's right shoulder).

Here's another one during the ceremony down at home plate.

The game started off with the D-Backs taking an early lead which they kept most of the game. Innings 5-8 were a tad boring because not much happened in the game. But, the Flag Lady kept us entertained. She was in the row in front of ours and is certifiably insane.

But, the 9th inning got fun because the Padres tied it up with a homer to left field (which just happened to go straight into my glove). Of course, I promptly threw it back and told them to go home, which encouraged cheers from the whole stadium.

Here's the video of me catching the 9th inning homer. See if you can find Spencer and I in both of the last inning home run clips.

To top it off, Chris Young nailed a homer in the 9th to win it for the D-Backs. Spencer and I had a blast.

The Talk

If you’ve ever had the “sex talk” with your kids, or you still have that moment to look forward to, let me tell you how it went for us last night (hopefully they won’t kill me when they grow up and find this post).

We had the talk with our two older sons, Spencer (10 yrs old) & Kaden (8 yrs old).
It was a fun, hilarious, serious, and fascinating experience for everyone.
The night started with a great dinner prepared by Jill, complete with locally grown, fresh corn-on-the-cob. Yes, that’s relevant to the story. But no, not in the way you’re thinking. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Before we get into it, you need to understand Spencer & Kaden. Spencer is the attentive, logical, scientific, good student. He accepts what you say as gospel and tends to be very obedient. Kaden often seems to be aloof – off in his own creative world. Yet, he’s always listening. He’s the deep thinker. You wouldn’t always know it, but he has deep insight into many things.

With our medical backgrounds, Jill and I planned to approach the talk from a scientific standpoint first and then transition into a discussion of morality, chastity, and obedience. We paper-clipped the necessary diagrams, photos, and laproscopic images, made a quick game plan, and jumped right into the discussion.

Since the boys were aware of Jill’s surgery last year, we figured we’d start there. We explained that mom can’t have babies anymore because she doesn’t have a uterus. At this point, the boys were attentive and following just fine.

Then we got into how a baby grows inside the uterus. We showed diagrams of an egg coming from the ovary (from mom) and sperm (from dad) joining the egg and creating cell that splits over and over again and grows into a baby. During this time, Spencer was nodding his head, following along just fine. It all made perfect sense to him. Kaden, on the other hand, held a perplexed look on his face until finally he blurted, “Wait! How did that sperm get in there?”

It’s not necessarily a funny question, but it broke the tension Jill and I were feeling and we all ended up laughing pretty hard.
After we finished explaining how the baby grows inside the mom, along with all of the female anatomy (met with Kaden hysterically laughing – to the point of crying) it was time to explain male anatomy. More laughing and rolling on the floor.

Puberty was the next topic. They both thought growing hair in their armpits was a rather hilarious subject. I explained all the changes that their bodies would be going through including changes below the waist, acne, muscle growth, hair in various places, and a deepening voice. We spent a few minutes talking about how the development of an “Adam’s Apple” causes a guy’s voice to get deeper. Right in the middle of that discussion, Spencer blurted “Finally!!!!” Jill and I thought for sure he was excited to finally develop a deeper voice. But his sentence continued, “Finally!!!! I got the corn out of my teeth!” Jill and I busted up with nervous laughter (because the big stuff was still coming).

As we got to the point where we actually had to tell them EXACTLY how all this works, I realized that I hadn’t rehearsed that part in my head beforehand. So, I went in circles a few times trying to find the words. I could feel Jill tensing up, probably wondering why the heck I wasn’t just getting to the punch line. Well, the punch line eventually came and it was met with acceptance from Spencer and total confusion from Kaden. Don’t get me wrong, he understood completely what we had just explained. He was just mentally trying to figure out the logistics.
He abruptly stood up, thrust his hips forward, and said “So, you just stick it in there?” Again, the ice-breaker. Jill and I were immediately rolling.

Needless to say, it was a great experience for all of us (I think). Jill and I hope it’s the start of many talks with our boys and relationships where they can be 100% open and honest with us. They’re good boys. We love them to death.

Summer Time

We had a great summer this year.  We left the heat in Arizona and went to California to visit family.  Tyler's dad turned 60 this year, so went to celebrate with them.  We had a great weekend of hangin' with the family, playing in the waves, digging for sand crabs, and a beach bonfire with hot dogs and smores.
baby showers, swimming, and dinners with everyone.
Happy 60th Birthday Dad, We love you and thank you for a wonderful weekend and beautiful pictures!!

Then we went down to my parents.
Disneyland, here we come...

July 3-4th Celebration, Fireworks, fun with Grandma and Grandpa

Then we met up with Uncle Tyler, Grandma&Grandpa, Troy&Nellie, Courtney, and their kids.  We went to Newport pier and played around on the rides, took a boat ride around the Island.  Went to Cafe Rio for dinner, then went over to Balboa Island and got Ice cream.  We walked around the island and saw all the patriotic homes all decorated not to mention the beautiful scenery.
Four little cousins all 4 years old!

What I love about being a dad

For me, Father's Day has been a time for reflection. I've had an opportunity today to think about why I love being a dad. Here's the short list:
  • I think the best part about being a dad to my 3 boys is their mother. She's absolutely amazing, the love of my life, super hot, and she makes me better every day.
  • I love playing "tickle monster" with my boys.
  • I love it when they beat me at something (usually its a game on the Wii) and I get to see their confidence rise.
  • I love playing catch.
  • I love when they tell me they love me (unprompted).
  • I love camping with my boys.
  • I love seeing Jill's wonderful qualities come out in the boys.
  • I cringe when my qualities come out and I know what they're going to do next (usually it's not a good idea, but I can't blame them, they get it from me).
  • I love watching them learn.
  • I enjoy one-on-one time with each of my boys.
  • I love when Ashton gives me a hug - he squeezes tight.
  • I love watching Kaden be creative - with legos, drawing, just about anything.
  • I love Spencer's passion for sports. He gets into sports WAY more than I ever have.
  • I love watching their faith and their testimonies grow.
  • I love watching them explore.
  • I love hearing them pray. Lately Ashton prays for everything and everyone. It's so cute.
  • I love when they make the right choices - especially when its hard.
  • I love when they cuddle up next to me when we're watching a movie.
  • I love watching them fight over postcards when I get back from a trip.
  • I love them no matter what.
I am so grateful on this Father's Day for my family. I couldn't ask for a more amazing wife and better children. I am a blessed man. Happy on Father's Day.

At Preschool Ashton answered questions about his daddy and here is what he said.  This was part of his Father's day gift...

Spencer's 10

My oldest boy is 10 years old today!!  Where has the time gone.  I could not possibly be old enough to have a ten year old.  That means I am getting OLD!  I still remember the day he was born like it was yesterday.  Kissing those precious soft cheeks just seconds after he entered this world.  Leaving our Father in Heaven, knowing he is trusting me and Tyler to raise this spirit in righteousness and love.  Wow, what an honor!  We have seen it as truly that.  Spencer is a special spirit, a strong spirit, who earnestly tries to do what is right.   He chooses to honor his parents and his Heavenly Father.  I love the moments when he doesn't know I'm watching, but he chooses  the right anyway.  I will find him in the early morning or late at night reading his scriptures or on his knees saying his prayers, or helping a brother in time of need.  It just melts my heart...he is just SO good!  Of course he has his moments of arguing with his brothers, or not wanting to do what is asked of him, but at the end of the day he choose to follow his Father in Heaven.  After all he is just a child, My Child and I love him to pieces and could not be more proud!!
We took Spencer and his friend to BJ's for dinner and then we were off to the batting cage!!
The boys of course wanted in on the action
Then we came back for cake and ice cream
Happy Birthday Spencer!!

A Bear is in the house

Spencer earned his Bear in Scouts, and as a little tradition he had to "Wrestle the Bear" to get his award hidden in the Bear den.  The dad's pretend to be the bear and the kids have such a great time wrestling for their award.
As you can see he came out with a piece of the Bear!!
